Problem
Organizations often face data quality issues where PCs are discovered or imported into the CMDB without clear ownership, asset references, or contract coverage. These “orphaned” records create risks in IT Asset Management, compliance, and support. Without a clear link to a user, asset, or contract, it becomes difficult to manage the device lifecycle, handle incidents, or ensure that costs are controlled.
What the Blueprint Includes
This blueprint brings together four essential entities:
- Personal Computer – the root of the model, representing individual PCs.
- User – ensures every PC is assigned to an active user.
- Hardware Asset – ensures every PC has a valid asset record.
- Contract – ensures PCs covered by leased, rented, or loaned assets are backed by an active contract.
Considerations
- User assignment: Make sure that “assigned to” always points to an active user. You can change this to another User reference, if needed.
- Asset linkage: PCs must reference a valid hardware asset to ensure lifecycle traceability.
- Contract coverage: Assets acquired through lease, rental, or loan must link to an active contract, valid for at least 30 more days.
- Attribute completeness: Serial numbers and asset tags should never be empty (enforced via field setup).
- Locations: Knowing where your assets are located, can be very useful information as well, especially if deviced do not belong to a single user.
- Flexibility: The model can be adapted by changing the root class, adjusting user references, or extending attributes for deeper tracking
