Problem
Organizational data is often inconsistent or poorly maintained. Departments may lack clearly defined ownership, financial alignment, or hierarchy. This leads to:
- Confusing accountability for services and approvals
- Inaccurate routing of tickets and workflows
- Misalignment between HR, Finance, and IT systems
- Complications when onboarding CSDM or CMDB governance
- Broken or incomplete references between key org entities (BU, Company, Cost Center)
This blueprint solves these issues by defining a reliable structure that brings order to core organizational data and ensures it can be trusted across the platform.
What the Blueprint Includes
These entities represent the authoritative core of an organizational model upon which service-related structures can later be built.
- Department – The root class representing an organizational department.
- Department (Parent) – Parent Department entity enabling hierarchical structures between departments.
- Business Unit – Higher-level organizational grouping connected to Departments.
- Company – Corporate or legal entity above Business Units and Departments.
- Cost Center – Financial structure element tied to Departments and their management.
- User – Individuals used for department ownership, and contacts to get more information.
- Active User – for checking that every department has active users.

Considerations
- CSDM does not define organizational structure models. This blueprint reflects widely used out-of-box structures rather than a CSDM-mandated design.
- Validate accuracy with HR and Finance. Ensure Company → Business Unit → Department → Cost Center structure matches real governance.
- Align naming conventions and hierarchies. Incorrect hierarchy causes reporting inconsistencies across tools.
- Map data providers appropriately. The blueprint uses the department head as data provider; ensure this matches governance.
- Field Setup requirements apply. The blueprint enforces key fields (ID, Name, Description) through its field setup configuration.
- Checking active users can be removed if data volumes are huge.
Benefits
- Reliable organizational backbone: All other CMDB and service structures depend on accurate foundational org data.
- Improved accountability: Department heads and primary contacts become consistent points of responsibility.
- Better workflow routing: Ticket assignment, approvals, and escalations run on valid, active references.
- Consistent cross-department reporting: Improves alignment across HR, Finance, and IT.
- Better activity and CMDB reporting that are based on Departments.
- Supports future CSDM maturity: Clear org ownership enables better service mapping, portfolio management, and consumption insights.
- Reduces maintenance effort: Automations and quality rules keep organizational data clean over time.
