Problem
Many organizations have well-documented infrastructure components but lack clarity on how those components deliver specific technical services. Without standardized technical service offerings, it’s difficult to understand ownership, manage change, or align operational support. This blueprint addresses that gap by defining a consistent structure for technical service offerings linked to supporting application services, catalogs, and responsibilities.
What the Blueprint Includes
This CSDM Walk phase model introduces the following key entities:
- Technical Service Offering – The root entity representing a deliverable technical service within the organization’s service catalog.
- User – Represents persons managing the service offering and the parent Technical Service.
- Group – Represents support and managed by groups (such as change, assignment or approval groups) for the offering.
- Technical Service – The parent Technical Service that includes this offering.
- Service Portfolio - The portfolio to which this Technical Service belongs.
- Application Service – The application-level service instance that supports or consumes the technical service.
- Dynamic CI Group – A rule-based grouping of configuration items supported by the service.
- Catalog Item – The service catalog entry through which the offering can be requested.
- Catalog – The collection of service items published for request and visibility.

Considerations
- Confirm that each technical service offering aligns with your agreed service taxonomy and CSDM service classifications.
- Use Approval, Support, and Change groups consistently to clarify accountability.
- Link to the appropriate catalog items to support request fulfillment processes.
- If you already model business service offerings, ensure the technical service offerings are connected or distinct as per your operating model.
- Review and update references to Users and Groups to reflect current operational structures and responsibilities.
- Before publishing, verify that each offering’s CI relationships reflect actual dependencies between services, applications, and supporting infrastructure.
Benefits
- Improved visibility: Creates a clear service catalog structure for technical offerings.
- Operational control: Ensures ownership and accountability through linked user and group references.
- Change readiness: Supports Change and Incident Management by clearly showing which offerings support which CIs.
- Foundation for Run phase: Establishes the base for service health monitoring, performance tracking, and lifecycle management in later maturity stages.
- CSDM compliance: Aligns your CMDB structure with the ServiceNow Common Service Data Model for scalable governance and AI-based insights.
- Defining technology management services lets you view and manage the technology you provide to the business.
