Value Streams – CSDM 5 Foundation

Sep 22, 2025

Problem

Organizations often struggle to connect business strategy with operational execution. Without a clear mapping between capabilities, processes, and applications, it becomes difficult to measure value delivery, prioritize investments, or identify where gaps exist. This blueprint ensures that Value Streams are explicitly modeled, creating transparency between business goals and the services or applications that enable them.

What the Blueprint Includes

This blueprint introduces the following entities and how they relate to Value Streams:

  1. Value Stream – the root entity that represents the flow of activities delivering value to customers.
  2. Value Stream Category – a classification mechanism to group Value Streams by type (e.g., customer engagement, order fulfillment, product development).
  3. Value Stream Stage – distinct phases within a Value Stream, representing groupings of activities.
  4. Product Model – defines the products used within the Value Stream (services, applications, or technical products).
  5. Business Capability – a high-level ability the organization requires to execute its mission.
  6. Sub Capability – a more detailed capability supporting a higher-level Business Capability.
  7. Business Process – a defined set of steps carried out to achieve business outcomes.
  8. Sub Process – a more detailed process supporting a higher-level Business Process.
  9. Business Application – applications that enable or automate Business Processes.
  10. Business Service – the customer-facing service that the Value Stream ultimately supports.

Considerations

  • Strategic alignment: Ensure Value Streams are categorized consistently across the organization to support portfolio reporting.
  • Capability hierarchy: Keep capability modeling clean—avoid overloading Value Streams with unnecessary detail.
  • Process granularity: Only include Business Processes and Sub Processes where they add clarity to execution.
  • Application traceability: Maintain relationships between Business Applications and the processes they support, enabling clearer impact analysis.
  • Service mapping: Relating Value Streams to Business Services ensures end-to-end visibility from customer value down to technical execution.

Benefits

  • Provides a clear line of sight from strategic intent to operational execution.
  • Supports investment decisions by showing which capabilities and applications deliver the most value.
  • Enables impact analysis across services, applications, and processes.
  • Establishes a foundation for enterprise architecture and digital transformation initiatives by linking business strategy with IT services.
