Problem
Many CMDBs contain orphaned Servers discovered by integrations or tools, but without clear ownership, support, or service alignment. This makes troubleshooting, change planning, and service impact analysis difficult. By applying this blueprint, Servers are consistently linked to responsible users, groups, and services, ensuring accountability and business relevance.
What the Blueprint Includes
The blueprint defines the following entities for Crawl-stage Server management:
- Server – The root entity, representing infrastructure servers in scope.
- User – Individual users who manage or own servers.
- Group – Support or management groups responsible for server operations.
- Application – Applications that may depend on or run on Servers.
- Application Service – Introduced as a Service Instance class to link Servers to higher-level services.

Considerations
When applying this blueprint:
- Use appropriate references between Server and User to ensure accountability.
- Update Group references to reflect your actual support model.
- Application Service (cmdb_ci_service_auto) was introduced in Paris – ensure this is used instead of outdated Application links.
- Add downstream Server relationships to match IT infrastructure models (e.g., virtualization platforms, clusters, storage, networks).
- Review Server class filters to include/exclude types (Windows, Linux, Unix, ESX, etc.).
Benefits
- Improved Accountability – Always know who manages and supports each Server.
- Better Change & Incident Management – Servers are tied to services and support groups, reducing impact and resolution times.
- Foundation for Maturity – Establishes clean, reliable Server records that can be expanded in Walk/Run phases.
- Reduced Orphans – Servers are quickly linked to applications/services, preventing untraceable infrastructure.
