Business Applications – Minimum Viable Data

Problem

Business Applications are often recorded in the CMDB without proper ownership, support structures, or service relationships. This creates challenges in accountability, governance, and operational management, not to mention maintaining the rest of the required details.

This blueprint solves the problem by requiring essential references and relationships, so that every Business Application has clear accountability and linkage to its supporting services.

What the Blueprint Includes

The blueprint includes the following entities:

  1. Business Application – The central entity in the scope of the model.
  2. User – Represents application owners or responsible individuals.
  3. Group – Represents supporting or managing groups.
  4. Service Instance – Represents the services consumed by the Business Application.

Considerations

  • The primary focus at this point is to identify the individuals who should maintain minimal Business Application data that already brings value.
  • Align user roles such as IT Application Owner and Business Owner with your governance model.
  • Ensure group references (Support Group, Managed By Group) reflect your operating structures.
  • Maintain active status checks on users and groups to prevent broken references.
  • Use Service Instance relationships to map applications to operational services for impact analysis.
  • Apply the 5 Step model for better data quality: begin with these minimum viable references and expand gradually.
