Problem
Application Services are often poorly connected in CMDBs—sometimes missing ownership, lacking support group references, or disconnected from the applications and servers they rely on. This results in incomplete service visibility and makes it harder to manage incidents, changes, and dependencies. The blueprint solves this by enforcing minimum relationships to people, groups, and technical components.
What the Blueprint Includes
The blueprint defines the following entities: A.
- Application Service – The root entity representing the service instance.
- User – Users who can be responsible as owners or managers.
- Group – Support and management groups tied to the service.
- Business Application – Higher-level application context for the service.
- SDLC Component – Optional upstream class representing lifecycle components.
- Application – Applications that the service depends on.
- Server – Servers that run or host the service.

Considerations
When applying this blueprint:
- Ensure correct references between Application Service and Users (Managed by / Owned by).
- Align Group references with your actual support and operating model.
- The SDLC Component class requires the “CMDB CI Class Models” plugin.
- Replace Application and Server references if needed to match your infrastructure or middleware.
- Downstream CI relationships use an Alternative Link Group, meaning at least one downstream dependency (Server or Application) must be present.
Benefits
- Clear Ownership & Accountability – Every service has defined users and groups.
- Improved Service Mapping – Application Services are linked to Business Applications, Applications, and Servers for full-stack visibility.
- Flexibility – Alternative Link Groups allow either server- or application-based downstream connections, adapting to your operating model.
- Foundation for Service Reporting – Establishes Application Services as reliable records in CMDB, enabling maturity in service management.
