Problem
Business Applications often enter the CMDB without proper ownership, lifecycle data, or links to the services they rely on. This creates “orphan” applications that cannot be governed effectively or tied back to business outcomes. The Crawl blueprint solves this by requiring connections to people, groups, service instances, and SDLC components, ensuring accountability and service context from the start.
What the Blueprint Includes
The blueprint defines the following entities:
- Business Application – Root entity representing the design aspect of applications.
- User – Assigned as Business Owner or IT Application Owner.
- Group – Assigned as Support Group or Managed By Group.
- Service Instance – Formerly called Application Service (renamed in Yokohama release), representing instances of a Business Application.
- SDLC Component – Development and lifecycle components supporting the application.

Considerations
- Ensure Business Owner and IT Application Owner roles are populated with active users.
- Align Group references with your actual operating model.
- Note that Application Service (cmdb_ci_service_auto) has been renamed to Service Instance in CSDM 5.0 (Yokohama).
- This blueprint uses an Alternative Link Group: Business Applications must link to Service Instances either directly or via SDLC Components.
- Example Field Setup conditions are included, requiring key attributes such as Name, Lifecycle Stage, Lifecycle Status, Business Criticality, Application Category, Description, and Architecture Type.
Benefits
- Clear Governance – Defined owners and groups make accountability transparent.
- Lifecycle Control – Mandatory lifecycle fields (stage, status) provide a reliable maturity view.
- Service Context – Applications are tied to Service Instances, ensuring business-to-IT traceability.
- Future Proofing – Establishes a solid foundation for moving to Walk and Run phases of CSDM 5.0.
