Business Applications – CSDM 4 Crawl

Problem

Business Applications are often inconsistently defined or lack ownership, making it hard to manage lifecycles, analyze dependencies, or trace business impact. Without proper governance, organizations face:

  • Duplicate or incomplete application records,
  • Lack of accountability for ownership,
  • Weak traceability between applications and services.

This blueprint solves these issues by setting clear minimum relationships and attributes needed for reliable Business Application data.

What the Blueprint Includes

This blueprint introduces the following entities:

  1. Business Application – the central element of the model.
  2. Application Service – services consumed or enabled by the application.
  3. SDLC Component – software components contained within an application.
  4. User (Business Owner) – business stakeholder responsible for the application.
  5. User (IT Application Owner) – technical owner responsible for lifecycle and maintenance.
  6. Group (Support Group) – the group providing day-to-day application support.
  7. Group (Managed By Group) – the group accountable for overall governance of the application.

Considerations

  • Ensure both Business Owner and IT Application Owner are assigned and active.
  • Support and Managed By Groups should reflect your operating model for accountability.
  • Use Application Service (cmdb_ci_service_auto) to link applications to services and infrastructure.
  • Use SDLC Component (cmdb_ci_sdlc_component) for modular components (part of the “CMDB CI Class Models” plugin).
  • Apply field setup rules: name, description, lifecycle stage, architecture type, and business criticality should always be defined.
